data buying guide

Ten questions. Ask them of us too.

This page is the checklist we would want you to run against any data provider, including this one. If a provider hesitates on more than two or three of these, that hesitation is the answer. Our answers are on this page next to the questions, so you can compare them with whoever else is quoting you.

the six marks

What good contact data actually looks like.

Before the questions, the criteria. These are the six dimensions worth judging a file on — price and record count are not among them.

01

Accuracy

The record identifies the right person at the right company with the right title. A valid address attached to the wrong job title is not accurate data, it is a bounce that has not happened yet.

check the sample

02

Completeness

Enough fields to segment and personalise: company, title, industry, size, location. An email address on its own cannot be targeted, only blasted.

11 fields

03

Freshness

When was this record last checked? B2B data decays at roughly 20 to 30 percent a year. A list untouched for over a year is a liability regardless of size.

ask the date

04

Relevance

Can you filter to your ideal customer profile, or only to broad pre-built lists? Filters are the difference between a list and a directory.

five filters

05

Consistency

The same formatting throughout — country names, titles, industries. Inconsistent data breaks on CRM import and quietly ruins segmentation.

normalised

06

Uniqueness

Duplicates removed before delivery, not after you complain. The same person receiving your email twice is a bad first impression and a broken report.

the ten questions

Ask each of these. Ours are answered here.

Take this list to any provider you are considering. Where our answer is a limitation rather than a feature, it is written as one.

question 01

Where did these addresses come from, and how were they collected?

Ours: three streams — permission-based collection, public web and business directories, and licensed data partners under written agreement. Every record carries a source tag.

answered

question 02

When were these records last verified?

Ours: the verification pass runs monthly on the 9th, 11th or 13th, and every list is re-run before dispatch. Each row carries its own date.

answered

question 03

Can I get a sample before I commit?

Ours: 100 rows, free, from the live file, in the same eleven columns as the paid version. No card and no call.

answered

question 04

Can I upload my own suppression file before delivery?

Ours: yes, free, screened out of the build before the file reaches you.

answered

question 05

What accuracy do you actually claim?

Ours: up to 85% verified on a standard build; 99% on request, arranged before you order. Never 100% — that claim is not honest from anyone.

answered

question 06

What happens if the list underperforms?

Ours: hard bounces above 5% within seven days of delivery and the file is refunded in full, or replaced, your choice.

answered

question 07

What fields are included?

Ours: eleven, the same in every file. Company size and revenue are on the row, not an upsell. Empty where we do not hold the value.

answered

question 08

What usage rights come with the file?

Ours: one-time purchase, yours to use. No seat limits and no renewal — and equally, no live platform, no API and no refresh feed.

stated limit

question 09

Do you have a DPA for EU or UK records, and how do you handle CCPA?

Ours: a DPA is available on request for EU and UK records; deletion and opt-out requests are actioned and added to permanent suppression.

answered

question 10

How does your price compare, and when are you the wrong choice?

Ours: $99 flat, once. We are the wrong choice if you need live search, CRM integration or continuously refreshed data — a subscription platform is the right purchase then.

stated limit

red flags

Five signals that predict a bad purchase.

All three are legitimate. They differ on speed, cost per record, and how much of the work you do yourself.

“100% accurate” or “100% compliant”

Neither exists. People change jobs daily, and compliance depends on how you send, not only on where the data came from. This is the single most reliable warning sign.
No sample, or a curated demo file
Ask for rows from the live file. A provider who will not show you the product before payment is telling you something about the product.
No verification date on the record
Without a date, “verified” is a word rather than a claim. Ask when, not whether.
A price far below everyone else
Data costs money to collect and to verify. Dramatically cheap usually means recycled, scraped, or never verified in the first place.
test before you trust

Run the sample through a verifier that is not theirs.

Ask any provider for 50 to 200 rows and push them through an independent verification tool. Hard bounces above 2% in the sample mean the full file will fail the same way at scale. A high share of role addresses — info@, sales@, support@ — instead of named contacts suggests scraped data being resold as B2B. Ten minutes of testing beats a week of reading review pages.

questions

Questions about buying data

How much should a B2B list cost?
The market runs from a few cents per record to subscriptions above two thousand dollars a year. Our answer is a flat $99 per file, once, which is cheap for a large market and poor value for a very small one — say so and we will tell you which you are.
No. What matters is how much of it matches your profile after four filters. Ask for the filtered count, not the catalogue total.
Only as a starting point, and only if it is below 100% and attached to a method. Then test it yourself on a sample.
Verify it before sending anything further, remove hard bounces and role addresses, and segment what is left. Do not send the remainder from your main domain to find out.
