email marketing guides

What to do with the file in the two weeks after you buy it.

A purchased list is a starting position, not a campaign. These guides cover the part that decides whether it works: how to segment it, how much to send and how fast, what the first email should actually say, and how to read the numbers that come back. Nothing here requires our data specifically.

the sequence

Six things, in this order.

Most first campaigns on a purchased list fail at step one or step two, not at the copy. Do these in order and the copy gets a fair test.

01

Re-verify the file, even ours

Run it through your own verifier before the first send, particularly if it has been sitting for a few weeks. Contact data decays continuously; a verification date is a fact about the past.

always

02

Segment before you write

Industry, job title, company size, country and department. Five filters is enough to write five genuinely different emails, and five relevant emails beat one generic one by a distance.

five filters

03

Warm the sending domain

Two to three weeks of gradually increasing volume from a new or cold domain. A ten-thousand-row blast on day one is a deliverability problem you then blame on the data.

2–3 weeks

04

Write for one segment at a time

Reference the industry, the role, or the market. Personalisation beyond the first name is what separates a relevant email from a mail merge, and the eleven fields exist to make it possible.

use the fields

05

Send in waves and watch the first one

Test on a small tranche before the full send. If the bounce rate on the first wave is above 2%, stop and re-verify rather than pushing the rest through.

test small

06

Suppress and remove, permanently

Unsubscribes, complaints and hard bounces come out of the database — not out of one campaign. Send them to us too, and they go into permanent global suppression.

permanent

the metrics that matter

Four numbers to watch, and what a bad one means.

Open rate is the least useful number in this list and gets the most attention. These four tell you something you can act on.
Total bounce rate
Above it, the data or its age is the problem. Stop the campaign, re-verify, and remove hard bounces from the database rather than just the send list.
Spam complaint rate
Above 0.1% is risky; Gmail and Yahoo treat 0.3% as the point where inbox placement collapses. A complaint spike almost always means the segment was wrong, not the copy.
Reply rate by segment
The only metric that reflects whether the audience was right. Compare it across segments rather than against someone else’s benchmark.
Unsubscribe rate
A steady low rate is healthy. A sudden jump on one segment means you mis-targeted that segment — pull it before the next wave.
practice

Two lists worth keeping next to the send button.

Nothing exotic. These are the habits that separate a campaign that keeps working from one that burns a domain in a fortnight.

Authenticate the domain: SPF, DKIM and DMARC before the first send

Send from a subdomain you can afford to damage

Keep daily volume flat rather than spiky

Write a different first line for every segment

Remove hard bounces from the database, not just the campaign

Send the whole file on day one to prove the data works

Mail role addresses like info@ and sales@ in a first campaign

Reuse a file you bought last year without re-verifying it

Judge a segment on open rate alone

Keep sending to a segment that is complaining

the honest limit

Verified addresses do not make a bad offer work.

Everything on this page assumes the offer is worth reading. A perfectly verified, perfectly segmented, perfectly warmed campaign selling something nobody wants will produce a clean bounce rate and no revenue. Data removes one failure mode. It does not remove the others, and we are not going to pretend it does.

questions

Questions about sending

Which platform can I send a purchased list from?
Not Mailchimp or HubSpot — both prohibit purchased lists outright. Cold outreach tools built for the purpose are the usual answer. Check the terms of your platform before you import.
On a warmed domain, low hundreds per mailbox is a common ceiling for cold outreach. Ramp up over two to three weeks rather than starting there.
Not in a first campaign. They are shared mailboxes with low engagement and higher complaint risk. We segment them separately for exactly that reason.
Two waves. The first tells you about deliverability; the second, sent after you have fixed what the first exposed, tells you about the offer.
